IPT including SIP must deliver on better, faster, cheaper and easier to use than TDM.

In SIP Means Change, I discussed the value of time and the necessity of improving SIP/IPT to deliver on better, faster, cheaper and easier to use solutions than TDM. I also mentioned that some SIP phones including other SIP/IP devices are set to get their clocking from various NTP sources.Just in from Napatech:

Napatech released a new time synchronization feature today that allow extremely accurate packet time stamping. This is important for measuring quality of service factors, such as latency, in packet networks. Available on the latest Napatech intelligent network adapters for real-time network analysis, the time synchronization solution allows Napatech network adapters to be synchronized with a variety of time sources, such as Global Positioning System (GPS), IEEE 1588v2, CDMA and Pulse Per Second (PPS) sources. This allows packets to be time-stamped with an accuracy of 50 nanoseconds. The time synchronization solution also allows Napatech adapters to be daisy-chained allowing a single time synchronization source for multiple adapters.

"Accurate time stamps are critical for latency measurements. In financial trading, latency can mean not making your trade in time, resulting in millions or even billions in losses. For accurate time stamping you need effective time synchronization and Napatech now provides the most comprehensive solution with support for many of the major protocols and methods," said Erik Norup, President Napatech Inc.

IPT including SIP must deliver on better, faster, cheaper and easier to use than TDM. Regardless of what you think the technology should do or be able to do, business doesn't stand still and isn't interested is wasting time, money or resources. The industry is touting "real time communications" and that's something that most networks can't deliver on today. Timing is everything and it's seemingly unlearned by those that deem change doesn't apply to their solution. Users want always on and instant availability within reason.

Understand that what Napatech stated may be applied in extreme cases such as financial trading. Thinking about it further--whose time isn't important and how valuable each organizations or individual's time is, this really necessitates more improvements end-to-end in the IPT solutions.IPT including SIP must deliver on better, faster, cheaper and easier to use than TDM.
