Since last I wrote about Fluke Networks' TruView Live cloud-based real-time monitoring service, a lot has happened. For one, Fluke is now part of NetScout Systems, acquired in July 2015. Secondly, TruView Live's scope now includes VoIP monitoring.

With the VoIP addition, TruView Live should help enterprise and managed service providers isolate problematic voice issues in converged and hosted networks. TruView Live uses either TruView Pulse, a Power-over-Ethernet appliance; Virtual Pulse, a 12-MB agent file; or Global Pulse, hosted in the Amazon cloud; and is easily deployed within minutes of setting up the appliance or softphone in a call manager.

TruView answers two questions: Can I make a call? And, what is the expected quality of that call? With the answers to these questions, the tool can make determinations such as applicable bandwidth and link availability, since the probes are basically set to dial other agents or automated attendants either internal or external to the network. A network manager can set up these "test" calls on a schedule; the reporting can be invaluable for those relying on hosted services and finding that they have little control or issues in resolving hosted voice problems.

This type of monitoring is proactive, simple, and affordable -- and makes a good use case for either private networks or cloud environments. TruView Live can empower enterprise IT teams, and help them reduce reliance on monitoring information received from their cloud providers. This visibility is also useful in planning capacity for bandwidth and in testing the network throughout the business operating hours.

With adequate monitoring and reporting in place, IT organizations can enforce service-level agreements and demand service when issues arise about which they might not previously have known. This type of metrics and reporting is imperative, and should be a no-brainer for any organization.

NetScout offers TruView Live through a free 15-day trial.
