At Enterprise Connect, hear from peers who have communications-enabled applications to improve operational effectiveness.

IMHO, the best session you can attend at Enterprise Connect Orlando 2015 will be "Integrating Communications with Business Apps: Case Studies" at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17, when a panel of customers will describe their successes with communications-enabled applications.

At least since the outset of unified communications, the greatest benefits and the highest returns on investment in enterprise communications come from the application of the new UC technologies to change how work gets done (see CEBP Comes to Life). During this session, you'll hear from your peers about how they are improving operational effectiveness by applying UC capabilities to eliminate waste, reduce delays, and improve outcomes. Here are some examples:

  • One of the nation's top medical centers improved in-patient care and safety through real-time video monitoring of patient well-being

  • Premier donors at a major state university receive improved, personalized service through an intelligent communications app that links them to their personal fundraiser

  • A property and casualty insurance company has integrated video into its claims processing workflow to improve services and cut costs

  • A large school district has integrated communications with class schedules so it can accurately and quickly route calls to teachers throughout the campus

You also will hear about the technology choices these customers have made, selecting UC platforms from Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise, Avaya, Microsoft, and Vidyo.

If you want the details, you'll want to be there. If you're already coming to Enterprise Connect, put this session on your list; otherwise, don't forget to make those travel plans.

As these examples will show, enterprise organizations should plan for and use communications tools in the same ways as other business software applications. While the tendency is to view VoIP as network infrastructure, communications solutions need to live at the application layer, where business and organizational processes and workflows operate to drive efficiencies, improve outcomes, and reduce costs.

As I recently wrote in the InformationWeek post, "7 Ways to Escape Communications Dark Ages," as much as 54% of employee time is spent, in some way or another, in a communications-based task. Whether text-based or real-time, at a stationary location or while mobile, the tasks add up to a huge amount of time and money spent on communications. By any calculation, this represents trillions of dollars of cost per year, and the reason to make improvements is compelling.

In the article, I describe seven primary methods for making communications-related improvements using communications-enabled apps and methodologies, also called communications-enabled business processes, or CEBP. You will hear about these same methodologies in our communications-enabled apps session at Enterprise Connect. The innovative enterprise customers on the panel are already reaping the benefits; join us to learn how your organization can do that, too.

Hope to see you in Orlando and at this session!

Marty Parker

Marty Parker brings over three decades of experience in both computing solutions and communications technology. Marty has been a leader in strategic planning and product line management for IBM, AT&T, Lucent and Avaya, and was CEO and founder of software-oriented firms in the early days of the voice mail industry. Always at the leading edge of new technology adoption, Marty moved into Unified Communications in 1999 with the sponsorship of Lucent Technologies' innovative iCosm unified communications product and the IPEX VoIP software solution. From those prototypes, Marty led the development and launch in 2001 of the Avaya Unified Communications Center product, a speech, web and wireless suite that garnered top billing in the first Gartner UC Magic Quadrant. Marty became an independent consultant in 2005, forming Communication Perspectives. Marty is one of four co-founders of UCStrategies.com.

Marty sees Unified Communications as transforming the highly manual, unmeasured, and relatively unpredictable world of telephony and e-mail into a software-assisted, coordinated, simplified, predictable process that will deliver high-value benefits to customers, to employees and to the enterprises that serve and employ them. With even moderate attention to implementation and change management, UC can deliver the cost-saving and process-accelerating changes that deliver real, compelling, hard-dollar ROI.
