Collaboration chief talks about her first nine months at Cisco, and hints at what's to come from the company moving forward.

Amy Chang made her entrance into the collaboration industry last May, when Cisco acquired Accompany, the “relationship intelligence” company she founded and led as CEO. With the acquisition, Chang, who had been on the Cisco board, became SVP of Cisco’s Collaboration Technology Group, taking over the reigns over from Rowan Trollope, who left the company to become CEO of cloud contact center provider Five9.
While collaboration hadn’t been in Chang’s wheelhouse, artificial intelligence (AI) and analytics – so central to optimizing employee and customer engagement today – has been. Prior to founding Accompany, Chang worked at Google, leading teams responsible for Google Analytics and Website Optimizer, among other products. Before joining Google, Chang worked at eBay in paid search; as a McKinsey consultant for the semiconductor and software industries; and in hardware at Intel, AMD, and Motorola. Over the years she has served on the Cisco, Splunk, Informatica, and Procter & Gamble boards, and today retains her position at the latter.
Chang has been fairly quiet since joining Cisco. But she broke the silence in November, speaking publicly for the first time at Cisco’s Partner Summit, and is set to take to the mainstage at Enterprise Connect 2019 – one of five keynoters in a lineup that includes Lori Wright, GM of Microsoft 365; Pasquale DeMaio, GM of Amazon Connect; Rany Ng, director of product management at Google; and, as announced today, Joe Park, chief digital architect and VP of associate digital experience at Walmart.
I had the opportunity to sit down and get to know the “mysterious” Amy Chang in a recent No Jitter interview. Having had spoken with various members of her executive team, I had heard about her energetic personality and striking intelligence but knew little of how she planned on leading the Collaboration group forward. In our chat, Chang shared her thoughts on everything from that to her transition into Cisco leadership, the place for AI in collaboration, and Cisco’s recent executive leadership changes.
On Jumping in Feet First…
Once at Cisco, Chang said she began to identify areas that could be improved, and found a lot of low-hanging fruit. “We’re talking like watermelon-sized fruit on the ground that you can pick up,” she said.
As one example, she noted that she is working to reduce the time for order processing by an order of magnitude. “I just want to keep shrinking and shrinking and shrinking [the number of days it takes partners and customers to get stuff in their hands] down so that we’re extremely responsive,” she added.
These efforts to make doing business with the group easier are reflected in Cisco Collaboration’s earnings, Chang said. A year ago, before Chang had started, Cisco’s Applications group (within which Collaboration sits) had low single-digit growth. Now, as of the November earnings report, the Applications group is seeing 18% year-over-year growth, and Collaboration is “a very significant portion of that,” she said. “We have a long way to go, but you’ll see [more] progress throughout the year.”
On Product Strategy…
At a high level, Chang said she thinks about the business through the lens of what collaboration does for people. “Collaboration touches 300 million human beings on a regular basis for Cisco,” she said. “And we’re on the front lines of crafting that meaningful experience.” It’s about building bridges, not islands, she added.
It’s all about simplification, she said, and about having a single product portfolio. Enterprise IT shouldn’t need to be aware of Cisco’s internal structure, Chang said. “Our org chart should be opaque to you because the products should work as one portfolio,” she emphasized, noting that toward this end Cisco will be delivering “something that customers have been asking for, for a long time -- a unified client, where calling, messaging, and meetings are all together … in one simple experience.”
Chang gave a nod to the redesigned Webex platform as an example of how Cisco intends to create cohesion in the collaboration experience. “The [Webex] experience has gone from being the best that the 2000s had to offer to really being in the year 2019,” she said. For customers, the benefit of having a single platform is “multiplicative, not just additive,” she said. Think of Cisco Collaboration as a solution, not a bunch of point products, she added.
Chang’s strategy also revolves around interoperability, as well as around weaving intelligence through the portfolio. On the former, she pointed to its integrations of Webex with the Microsoft Office suite as evidence of the direction Cisco is moving in -- “where it all just works together.”
A final piece of the puzzle is continuing to serve premises-based customers. “We’re cloud-first, but not cloud-only,” she said. Cisco still has more than 30 million users on Jabber, many still active on premises-based solutions, Chang said. “These customers are going to be on those for a decade or two to come, and we’re not abandoning those products,” she added, noting a departure from the company’s previous stance.

On Cisco’s Executive Leadership…
Chang’s onboarding and Trollope’s offboarding was the start of a long list of leadership changes for Cisco. In the months that followed, several of Cisco’s executive leaders moved on to other companies. Most notably among them are former CTO for Cisco Collaboration Jonathan Rosenberg, who followed Trollope to Five9 and now serves as CTO and head of AI for the company; former GM of Cisco’s Unified Communications Technology Group Tom Puorro, who now serves as the EVP and GM of Group Systems at Plantronics; and former VP and GM of Cisco’s TelePresence and IP Phone business unit Snorre Kjesbu, who is now the head of product creation & fulfillment at Bang & Olufsen.
In addition to a cohesive product portfolio, Chang said we should expect to see the leadership coming together as a unit. Whereas in years past, Cisco would have one or two leaders be the faces delivering company strategy and vision, “now you’re seeing a whole new kind of leadership team come together and present the products, and the strategy, and the roadmaps to you… Why? Because the entire leadership team is working together as [one]” – and everybody is hungry for success, she said.
The team includes Cullen Jennings, a long-time Cisco Fellow who took over for Rosenberg as CTO of Cisco Collaboration; Sri Srinivasan, who leads Cisco’s Team Collaboration group; Alexandra Zagury, who became the leader for Collaboration Sales in August; Aruna Ravichandran, Cisco Collaboration’s new head of marketing; and Sandeep Mehra, who is the current leader of APJC Collaboration and will be taking over the role vacated by Kjesbu. Another Collaboration leader is Vasili Triant, who as head of the Customer Care business also will be taking the Enterprise Connect mainstage as a panelist in the Wednesday morning general session, “Why Customer Engagement Is Leading the Enterprise Communications Conversation.”
“The reason you haven’t seen me yet is you haven’t needed to,” Chang said. “It’s not about one person anymore. An entire team of people is here to really push this to the next level.”
On AI’s Role in Collaboration…
Chang has big plans for the role of AI in Cisco’s Collaboration portfolio, where it already provides facial recognition and automatic framing features in the company’s video systems and in the Webex Assistant, which understands voice commands for tasks like scheduling and starting meetings.
But remember, when Chang came on board, she brought all her Accompany technology with her, and there are plans in the works to bring this to market in Cisco’s portfolio. By pulling the Accompany tech into Cisco’s products, users will be able to prep for meetings like never before, Chang said. In a demo, Chang showed how a user would be able to select a meeting attendee from the Webex directory to pull up an interactive dashboard of information about that person – current title, previous employment, social network circles, educational background, related articles, and even prompts for things to mention about key interests.
“We’re pulling that information from hundreds of millions of sources,” Chang said. “Many Accompany employees came from Google and our expertise is in crawling the Web. Just look at what’s happening with AI on the contact center side, and imagine what you could do with all that data.”
Chang and her team at Cisco call this “cognitive collaboration,” and they believe it’s the next big thing that’s going to change the way people interact and work. It will help users know how to talk to a person, so that they can “relax into the human part of the meeting,” she said.
Chang does draw the line at the personal information, however. The data displayed doesn’t include information that isn’t related to work. “I don’t want to have to pretend not to know something about someone -- that’s the line,” she said. “It’s all about the work experience and the professional experience -- that’s the direction.”
