Company plans to expand messaging, meetings, and calling capabilities in Q2 2018.
October 24, 2017
Enterprise organizations pondering the future of Microsoft Teams as the "hero experience" promised of it should look to second-quarter 2018 for some of the functionality that'll get it there.
In a blog post today, Microsoft laid out its roadmap for expanding on the messaging, meeting, and calling capabilities already available in its team collaboration app, as well as for bringing more intelligent communications functionality to Teams. By the end of Q2 2018, Teams will support:
Screen sharing during chat and federation between companies, for an enriched messaging experience (For messaging, Teams already supports persistent chat, private one-to-one chat, and group chat)
Skype Room Systems plus cloud video interoperability capabilities so third-party meeting room devices will be able to connect to Teams meetings
Use of existing PSTN voice lines to activate calling services in Office 365. Additionally, Microsoft said voicemail for Teams will be available later this current quarter
Intelligent communications capabilities, such as the ability to record a meeting, store it in Teams, add transcription to it, and then run keyword searches of the meeting
In addition, as Microsoft preps Teams as its ultimate communications and collaboration client for Office 365, it's decided to simplify some of its naming for communications services: PSTN Conferencing is now simply "audio conferencing," Cloud PBX becomes "phone system," and PSTN Calling is "calling plan."
